Introduction:Efficient staff of Medicine Unit II, NIDCH have been doing an incredible job regarding the management of respiratory patient services under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr. Khairul Anam, Director of NIDCH. Based ontheir continuous hard work, this unit has entered a new era of treatment for pulmonary patients. It is deeply committed to setting the highest standard for patient care, as well as professional education.

Participation in this unit is not only in the academic arena where research activities and publication take place, but also in showing excellence in patient care at indoor and outdoor facilities, emergency services, and human resource development. Working as a team, we are looking forward to nimbly navigate a very competitive clinical and academic environment, without wavering from our mission of serving the people of the country.

Structure:The unit runs under the expert supervision of our honorableUnit Chief, along with two Assistant Professors, one registrar and two medical officers.

Services:

Academic: At present, three courses are running

 

·   MD (Pulmonology) under BSMMU and MD (Chest Diseases) under DU

·   FCPS (Pulmonology)

·   Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD)

 

 

 

Along with the above mentioned, students of various other disciplines get regular training here as a part of their curriculum. As an academic institution this unit conducts several activities, namely: morning sessions, seminars, symposiums, conferences, and journal presentations. They are all a part of continuous medical education (CME), as are research activities.

 

In addition to academic activities, patient care and clinical activities are carried out side by side. In broad terms this unit serves the community by 3 modules-

 

·         Outpatient services, where over 100 patients receive treatment per admission day

·         Inpatient services, where critical patients are admitted and served under close supervision

·         Pulmonaryinterventions, where patients are managed with modern and minimal invasive procedures.

Significant Achievements:Multiple minimally invasive procedures and surgeries were conducted under MU-II, such as pleural fluid aspiration and pleural tissue biopsy, tube thoracostomy and FNAC from lymph nodes.

The unit also continuously performs extraordinarily on interventional pulmonology.

Last year, more than 150 fibre optic bronchoscopies were performed under MU-II.

Few TBNA were also done.

Future:Medicine unit-II is devoted to providing evidence based pulmonary care and policy implementation in the coming years. Development of database for different diseases is a secondary milestone we are eager to reach. This unit is looking forward to upgrading the scope of pulmonary intervention, along withthe improvement of quality of treatment by multidisciplinary approach.
